I have continued with the idea process in making a digipak for And The Winner Is… I started out by making the front cover and then developing the rest of the digipak from there. I decided to it this way as I found from analysing other digipaks they all had themes that related to the front cover.
I have come up with many ideas that I have drawn out but I decided to move to making them computer generated. From doing this it made it simpler and easier to develop ideas.
An idea that I had been developing for a while was this one. It was first just the name with the gradient effect on a black background, I liked the way it was stylish and sophisticated. How I felt it wasn’t the correct representation of a Rock/Punk band. At the same time I had been working on another idea of just the initials of the band, it looked good but I felt it could be better. I then had the idea of brining the two ideas together. After some developing of the idea I came up with the final design. The cover looks stylish and sophisticated, yet with the use of the lines going through the white lines it looks mess and original everything that this rock band are.
Before the idea above I had been thinking of taking a picture on a long exposure so that it could capture light movement. I would take this picture while I would be writing the bands name, I believed that it would be interesting and creative.
Instead of having to take the photograph I decided it would be simpler to just design one via Photoshop. This is what I created after I developed the ideas of slow shutter effects.

Good to put your early planning on here Richard. Are there any existing artists/products you could compare these designs to? Where are your influences from?

ReplyDeleteThe first idea came from the Franz Ferdinand album cover (link above). I wanted to have a simple but effective album cover and I thought the Ferdinand cover did exactly want they want it to do. The design is simple yet it intrigues people because of the tilted text and the orange line to add attention. My design is similar in the way the bold text attracts the viewers eyes. Also the bands hard to read name adds interest as the viewer wants to know who the album is by so they have to spend longer than average reading it, thus adding attention.
The slow shutter idea came from the digipak of All American Rejects. The digipak showed the personality of the band and i feel the slow shutter effect show how energetic the band is.
