Skills Development
Digital Technology
What can you do with a digital video camera?
When given a digital video camera I am able to change the Ratio of the film so I am able to record in wide screen, other than this example I can change the camera settings confidently to create a mood. I also create the mood by the angle that I shot the scene in.
What sound recording techniques do you have?
The sound recording techniques that I have gained over the two years of A level media, is that to create digetic sound the actors need to speak clearly and loudly as this helps to make their voice standout form the other digetic sounds. If there is to much interference we can get the person to repeat their lines and then overlap the sound on to the clip.
What skills did you develop using Final Cut?
The skills that I have developed in using Final Cut have formed in a wide range of skills that have helped me to develop my editing technique. These involve the use of shortcuts i.e. Command R to render, Command 5 for effects, J to Rewind, K to fast forward, etc. Other than these just by using Final Cut it has simply helped me to become better at editing with working with what would look great in that certain area.
Did you use a digital camera (photographic)….
Yes, I used a digital SLR camera to take photographs of the locations that we did or were going to film at.
What skills do you have?
Through using the equipment available I have overall enhanced my confidence with using a wide range of cameras and editing software.
What were the good and bad things about the software and hardware at AS?
When doing the preliminary task at the beginning of AS we used the editing software imovie which I found to be very basic and would have preferred working using the editing software that is of higher quality.
Creativity
How creative were you at AS?
Consider camera framing, lighting, narrative ideas, planning the brief, location choice, stylistic concept prior to editing?
Originality?
Looking back on creating the thriller opening I can tell that I wasn’t as creative as I could have been. This is because of wanting to make the thriller opening stereotypical to that type of genre. However with shot that we used when filming were what I believe to be creative, i.e. the shot of the female character in the mirror of the car. This shot I found to be unique and original.
Research and Planning
What techniques did you use? Primary research (watching films etc) and Secondary research (books? Library? Internet search?, audience figures where? Institutional research?)
When it came to doing research into the field that I was studying I used the Internet to look at examples of thriller openings, putting questionnaires onto the Internet. other than using the Internet I watch music videos or thriller films that I rented so that I could analyse how they open a thriller. For the Music video work I have been reading books on how to create storyboards and how to be a cinematographer and director.

Half term work
1. How can human traffic be a metaphor for the Effects Model and the Gratifications Model of media?
Human Traffic could be considered a metaphor for the Effects Model, due to the theory implying that the mass media as a direct, immediate and powerful effect on the audience. From a previous discussion on does Human Traffic glorify drugs, I came to the conclusion that it was dependable on the person and how impressionable the person is, in whether they take drugs. The film shows a group of friends as the go to clubs, take drugs and have a good time. The drugs are shown to have a strong effect and immediate effects. This according to the Effects Model dupes and dopes the audience into believe that taking drugs will cause the audience to have better time when they are out.
The gratifications model suggests that the audience actively seeks out media, they are typically seeking it in order to gratify a need. This suggests that the people who seek out, i.e. View the video are trying to gratify the need that they have to take drugs suggesting that the people only want to watch the film so that they can understand the effects of drugs.
2.What is your opinion of how you think media will be dealt with you by law in the future?
From the reading multiple articles on how people have died or killed due to playing a video game for a long period of time. I believe that the law will have to become stricter in the amount of game usage that is allowed so that people cant die from a lack of sleep. This may even result to games being band altogether so that things can’t be taken out of hand as it what happened in 2010 when a 18 year old boy choked a 16 year old girl to death over a dungeons and dragons online game.

Location, Location, Location...final pt 2
We found out that the location we were going to film at you had to be insured for £500 per person. So because of the fact we have no money we are going to film at the abandoned barn, which unfortunately we didn't take any photos of.

The New Location, Location, Location..2
With a little good luck the people who own the Barn have given us permission to use the barn to film in. They just wanted to know a little more about the project so i will put together a letter , contain some of the basic information and a link to this blog.
The New Location, Location, Location..
and Wicken Green Village
I am hoping that by tonight i will be able to confirm that we are allowed to use the barn. For wicken green village we will have to wait and see if it is available this location Jos is sorting out.

SurveyMonkey
So far on the survey we have had 10 people complete it. already i can see which are the most popular results however there are some questions that are very close, like question 4. . Would you be interested in a music video that follows the lyrics or performance? the results show that they are both 50%, to hopefully have an out come we will leave it open for 3 more days.

Music Video Questionnaire
I put together this Questonnaire on Survey Monkey, so we could find out what the audience would expect to see in a unsigned bands music video. Hopefully from the results we can figure out what would make an entertaining video.

British Film Study
Robin Hood 2010
Released on the 12th of May.
The Robin Hood film is an adaptation of the very old story called Robin Hood. The story has been made into film 70 times, starting from 1908. Due to its idea is from the story which is British I would agree in believing this as being British subject matter.
In the plot there are the names and places of when & where the film takes place. In the first line it states it takes place in the, 12 century in England. It later goes into more detail by stating the Robin goes to Nottingham, also in the last paragraph it says the climax of the film starts on the south coast of England.
In the entire main cast there is only one English person.
Russell Crowe – New Zealand
Cate Btanchett – Australia
Max von Sydow – Swedish
Mark Strong – England
Oscar Isaac – Mexico
Danny Huston – Italy
The Director of the film, Ridley Scoot, was born in England almost making this film English. He is mostly known for being a producer, but has recently gone into directing such films as the A-Team, Body of Lies and Hannibal.
The genre of the film is Action, Adventure and Drama.
The production of the films are Universal Pictures that’s headquarters are in California, America. It was partnered with Imagine Entertainment, which did not tell of it location. As Mr Stiles said for it to be a english film it’s has to be an English production company.
The company that distributed the film was the universal pictures. The way that they advertised the film was from trailers, website, word of mouth and the actors going on to talk shows.
Flushed Away
Released in 2006 on December the 1st.
The film is set in the Sewers of London, in the sewer town it has recreations of Big Ben and other British icons.
Hugh Jackman - Australian
Kate Winsled - England
Ian Mckellen - England
Jean Reno - Morocco
Bill Nighy - England
Andy Serkis - England
Only two of the main stars of the cast are not English, still an improvement on Robin Hood.
There were two directors of this film, David Bowers was one of them and this was his first direction. The other was Sam Fell who has more experience in directing with doing the film The Tales of Despereaux. Also both directors were born in England.
The genre of the film is adventure and comedy.
The production company’s are Dreamworks Animation located in California and Aardman animations are located in England. However even with one of the company’s being from England doesn’t make it English.
The distorter for the film was Paramount Pictures which is located in America. I asume the way that they advertised the film was through trailers, talk shows and also by the opening day i.e. Red carpet.

Location, Location, Location......Wells-Next-To-The-Sea
There was one problem that i could see being a problem with filming at these locations the are a good 10 minute walk from the car park, so when it came to taking the drums I could see it was going to cause some problems. Lucky I realised that I own a wheelbarrow and could but the drums and other equipment into it.

- I have just emailed a director from the company Sitcom Soldiers, who specialise in making music videos. I asked him just for some simple pointers when it came to the filming.
Jon Stone.
I am studying AS Media and have been asked to make a music video for an unsigned band, i was wondering if you had any pointers that could help when it comes to filming? this would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Richard Harrison

Location, Location, Location.
With not being allowed to film at the St Georges church, due it being closed. So we are in a bit of a hurry to find a location to film the video, we then had a group idea of filming in a wood, we got this idea from the video by Paramore - Decode but with a mixture of Futures - The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
On the Thursday 16th we are driving to a local wood, Bawdeswell heath, to see if it is plausible to use the location to film at. We are also thinking of the woods at Wells-Next-To-The-Sea.

LYRICAL ANALYSIS
- THIS IS WHAT I PUT TOGETHER BEFORE WE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE LOCATION.
Band are getting ready to play. Shot of the floor poster saying And The Winner Is… At (Name of Place) foot steps on it and the music starts to play. Connor walking to the building footsteps in time with music. At 4 seconds he is in the doorway back to camera in focus, band are in the distance as the drums come in the band jumps they land as the guitars come in.
Up to 28 seconds their are shots representing the band close ups of faces instruments, doll shots. Changing shots with tints of colour and fit with the beat of the song.
Time is calling and I am waiting,
Connor in the background singing clock in the foreground in focus OR shot of Peter playing the guitar in focus and then focus on the microphone that is in the foreground as Connor moves up to it.
No sense of anticipation, Its underwhelming(Its underwhelming),
Connor is singing close up, when it gets to the 38 seconds the camera changes shot suddenly so it further back to give an effect of an echo.
The clocks been brewing up a storm,
Clock on the floor pan up to show band playing.
For so long now I don't care what its for,
Close up of Connor until ‘what’ and it changes to a close up Thomas playing full body shot.
Long shot showing the how band until the drums were it changes shot to show Jack playing them
And I'm still wearing the same old shoes,
Shoes tap or jumping to the song, camera tilted up to show Harry and Thomas on the other side.
Tracing my steps, pacing the same old rooms,
Close up of Connor’s microphone, with him in shot.
And I'm still staying in all night,
Harry and Thomas playing full body shot to individual close ups
Chasing the same old ghosts i'll never find,
Close up of drums and then a close of Connor as his voice fades pull camera away OR pan up
Cause i've been behind the glass,
Long shot and then jumps forward to match with the beat of the song. And then to the drums
Watching every scene stand up tall, then don't fall fast,
Close up of Connors eyes. Full body shot of him jolting down with the beat of the song.
Reflections seem so simple, when you can't ask,
Mirror that is tilted to show the band playing. Close up of peter.
A matter of hope that can never last,
A pan around Connor and then pull away at last.
Jack hitting the drums at 1 min 42 seconds
And I'm still wearing the same old shoes,
Tracing my steps, pacing the same old rooms,
And I'm still staying in all night,
Chasing the same old ghosts i'll never find,
Step after step,
I'm here again,
Cause I can pretend that I'm Happy when
Step after step,
I'm here again,
Cause I can pretend that I'm Happy when (That I’m Happy When)
And I'm still wearing the same old shoes,
Tracing my steps, pacing the same old rooms

And I'm still staying in all night,

this is what I put together during the summer term when we still believed we had use of the hall. We are going to use the same ideas that I have here but relate them to being in a forest.
Location
After the search for location we thought we found the perfect place but unfortunately they are closed on the sunday which is the only day we can film.

Media Forms and Conventions
One thing that you see in the early music videos of well known artists, there are great quantities of close-ups. This was and is done to make the artist well known to the viewer. Helping the artist to become a recognised face in the music industry and fans of the particular genre of music.
Due to And The Winner Is… being unsigned they don’t get to have huge advertisements of themselves, so the next best thing is a music video that you can put on to Myspace, Youtube and Facebook. This is why I believe close ups have to an essential to our music video.
When it comes to filming the music video I believe we shouldn’t use generic camera shots and to try to use depth of field i.e. Connor sing in foreground and for Harry to be playing the guitar in the background, and then for the focus to switch to harry or vice versa. (The Futures - The Boy Who Cried Wolf)
We will also follow Goodwin’s music video analysis, making sure that by the first time you see the band you instantly know they are Alternative/Pop Punk. We will represent this by their clothing, hair, guitars, location, etc.
The Futures - The Boy Who Cried Wolf
I'm pulling teeth,
Just to know your name.
And I'm growing my hair.
Cause I've been told
That you like it better
With an oh so sweet dose of honesty.
I'll plant you the seeds of a tree,
So you can start your climb away from me.
Cause nobody likes a liar like do.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
Too many times before, too many times before.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
And he is not one to be counted on.
I'm swinging signs,
To show you where to look.
I'm talking to your best friends,
Just to meet you at the end.
With my oh so sweet reputation.
I'll plant you the seeds of a tree,
So you can start your climb away from me.
Cause nobody likes a liar like do,
Like I do.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
Too many times before, too many times before.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
And he is not one to be counted on.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
Too many times before, too many times before.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
And nobody likes a liar.
You ignore what they say
As I do honest things.
We've got to hand ourselves in,
We've got to hand ourselves in.
You have cried too many times
When there's nothing in the field.
I'll always hate you for this,
I'll always hate you for this.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
Too many times before, too many times before.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
And he is not one to be counted on.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
Too many times before, too many times before.
I watched this video and thought the way they filmed it was genius. The shots have had a great deal of thought put into them, with the depth of field and the composition make it visually entertaining.
The lyrics key in with the visuals when the lead singer Ant West, sings the line ‘I'll plant you the seeds of a tree’, at this point there is a depth of field shot with the tree in the foreground and West in the background singing the line. This is the only place where there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, I found this quiet surprising. It surprised me because the video is them in a wood playing their instruments, yet it’s so well done that this relationship doesn’t actually matter. I like the way Sitcom Soldiers has done this. I believe that if we did a video in a similar it would go well for us. Through out the music video it cuts to the beat of the song, in certain place the change of shot picks up to fit in with the song. This happens at every time West sings
This is the boy who cried wolf,
Too many times before, too many times before.
This is the boy who cried wolf,
And he is not one to be counted on.
As he does the drumming escalates in beat and change of shot. This is to give an energetic vibe to the band and feel of what it would be like to see them live. At 1 minute and 36 seconds the change of shot increase again to fit in with the band jumping and swishing their hair around. During this there is one shot that really stands out for me the drummer hits a symbol and it goes up to cover the camera which then leads to a change in shot. The music video alternates between the relationship between the lyrics and the relation ship between the music. When the video is in the calm stages (1:54) of where the majority of the shot are West, the shots change on each new lyric line.
You ignore what they say
As I do honest things.
We've got to hand ourselves in,
During the time West sings these lyrics the shots only change when he finishes the last of the line. This creates a relationship with the lyrics and the shots shown. They use slow pans that give the effect of the song being peaceful and relaxing, the lyrics are also sung in a tranquil way which adds to the effect. Sitcom Soldiers have created a music video that has a wide age target audience. The energetic parts are intended for the young target audience and the slower part are for the older audience, this allows it to be enjoyed by a larger audience than a small selection.
During the video there are close ups of the band, as they are finally starting to get well know they need to really get their image through and they are doing this by the music video. They also did this in the video Sal Paradise, which also doesn’t follow lyrics but it gives them the impression of them as wanting to have fun. This is something that we will do to help get And The Winner Is… image out to the public.
The location that futures have filmed their music video is unlike the normal theme that a rock bands uses. I believe that it is more likely an area for a acoustic act. However they could be trying to represent the parts in the songs where it is more calming. The shot below of West singing is used at these part to make a connection between the visuals and beat.

However this is the only time that they don't fit into the typical rock theme. Their clothing is also stereotypical for their genre.
The area that I believe that I have taken on board for our music production are the way that they have not linked the lyrics and visuals. However it has not caused a band music video, it has caused a music video that relates to the beat and the energy of the band. This is something that I would like have in the music video.

Meeting 1
In the first meeting we listened to the song and then came up with some ideas. In the lyrics they have talk about pacing, steps, etc so we thought it was imperative to have at least a couple of shot of shoes.
We then went through locations and were would be a good place to film, we came up with a couple of ideas on was of a church in Norwich called St George's Church, i found out about it from Gray who I met at the Music Video Festival at Norwich. The church is filled with a load of random item which we felt could really relate to the song. After the festival I went down there and talked the woman who owns it she said for use filming it during the day rime but if we wanted to film during the night time it would cost £150-£200. Which was a little expensive, so if were going to do it we would do it during the day time.
The second location Jos came up with, who recently joined the group. He came up with the idea of filming at West Raynham R.A.F shelter. Were he had taken photos for his photography.
We felt that these locations would be great for filming And The Winner Is...(ATWI) music video. The areas we felt would be great to film at because they are interesting and unique which would keep the audience captured. This something that we would need as just a performance based music video can get a little dull. The Artic Monkey's music video for I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor is an example of this. The video is a stage performance and after a while the music and interesting shots cant stop the dullness of the music video. This is why we decided that we need an interesting location and was on of our highest priorities.
The first statement in Godwin's theory is music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. A characteristic for a rock band it to have a stage perfomance. ATWI are a mixture of rock and punk so having the music video based in a staged environment is exactly what they need to fit in with this characteristic. It will also show that the band is just about the music not selling themselves as sex symbols like Kings Of Leon.

On the 10th July, I (Richard) went to cambridge to see a Director of Photography to help me and to explain what I exactly had to do in the Music Video. When I got to the location of meeting he had also brought along a Director to help explain the feilds of being a DP.
From the meeting I found out that the DP goes through all the three stages of making the film Pre, Post and filming production. The DP is the person who makes sure every thing is fine with the lighting, camera movement, location, storyboard, and the coustumes. He/She also make sure that the film is going exatly how the director wants it to look, however if the director wants to try somthing new the DP has to decided if it fits in with the rest of the film.
The director also gave me a few pointers on the directing part and how to make shot look and how to make the actor really get into there roles.
The area that benfited me during the meeting was talking to the DP and director on shots. We spoke about what makes them intresting. This was the mainly the idea of using depth of field, and lining up the band in a way to make it intriguing. The examples they gave of this were of arranging them so the lead singer is closer to the camera and the rest of the band is in the distance and out of focus. Like the example on the left. This discussion would benfit me in the production stages as this helped me to think of creating shots that will keep the audience gripped.

This discussion would benfit me in the production stages as this helped me to think of creating shots that will keep the audience gripped.Friday, 9 July 2010

Lyrics to Kings and Queens
Oh--->
Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken
Oh->
We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
Into your eyes
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blindness
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams
We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell
The age of man is over
A darkness comes at dawn
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun
We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
We are the Kings
We are the Queens
We are the Kings
We are the Queens
